Funds Industry in Gibraltar
Gibraltar is well established as a European finance centre and offers a favourable fiscal environment for funds within a robust legal and regulatory infrastructure. It is underpinned by a stable government, the availability of a well qualified labour force, and its appeal is enhanced by its status within the EU.
Gibraltar is a common law jurisdiction in continental Europe and has its own legislature, with the UK being solely responsible for defence and external affairs. The government of Gibraltar legislates on all domestic matters including financial services and taxation.
Legislation has also been enacted to give legal effect to many of the EU directives which apply to Gibraltar including UCITS (Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities). Legislation has been drafted to meet EU requirements and Gibraltar can take advantage of the Single European Passport for banking, insurance and investment services. The ability to passport an investment management license from Gibraltar throughout Europe has proved appealing to investment managers.
Service providers are keen to grow the industry, and with its moderate cost base, Gibraltar is proving to be a very attractive alternative to other more seasoned jurisdictions.
